Keighley District Explorers 2014 -2015 notes from District AGM
Currently the district has 3 Explorer groups, based in Cullingworth, Fell Lane and Riddlesden. We should be opening a new one in silsden in the Autumn
Cullingworth currently has 15 members, with most attending on a regular basis (except for the recent @Exam season', where school must come first.) 10 are doing the DofE at Bronze and Silver level. Activities over the last year have included scavenger hunts, working on a local golf course, various types of cooking, fire lighting , snowmen and snowdog building, research on the dangers of substance abuse and teenage social issues, ice skating and 2.5 ton digger driving! Several explorers took part in the district Santa Collections, and 8 members attended the District St George's day. The group are also very active in the village, attending/helping at the village Gala, Bronte Vintage gathering, Remembrance Sunday and Oxenhope Straw race. 10 members also attended Big Camp.
Fell Lane Explorers currently have 21 members with 5 due to turn 18 and leave in the summer,. As a group of kids that didn't really know each other when they started, they are really coming together as a whole. There are 5 doing their Gold DofE with 2 having completed, the rest are doing their Bronze whish is almost complete, and silver expeditions will begin in July. Activities over the year have included caving, a Hagg Dyke trip, night hikes and chip walks and working on the Fellsman. Nights at the hut have included cooking , trip planning, DofE work including basic mountain first aid and general techniques, and team games etc. They have a camping trip to Cornwall planned for the first week of the summer (18-24th July, spaces available) where activities will include surf school, coasteering, cycling, sea kayaking and pasty eating.
Riddlesden have 12 regular explorers, with approximately 4 doing their DofE at some level. Last September they held a Hammock camp and activities in the past year have included scavenger hunts, wide games, route planning, trips to St.Ives and Low Wood, crafts and other activities. Several helped on the Santa Runs in December and 4 members (not including District Flag bearers) represented them at the District St George's Day service.
The Plan for this coming year is to hold a couple of events for all 3 groups together, as well as all the leaders getting together regularly for long term planning meetings, whilst setting up the new unit based in Silsden.
Crossroads Scouts 14 and beyond!
Scouts - this is the next stage in your scouting life - at 14 you have to move on to explorers - so decide which explorer group you want to join and we will register you with them - it is important to move on and join these sections not only for youself but also for the District and the groups that are run by them - they need you to attend and keep the groups at healthy levels. If you want to stay with your group and help in other sections we will also help you attain the correct training that you will be required to undertake - and again - for good healthy groups in the district your contribution to the other sections is essential to perpetuate the scouting movement.
